The first design brief was issued to encourage participants to think of Railton Road in Numbers and produce a typographic design inspired by numbers found on Railton Road. As Adobe Photoshop is the tool they will assess their technological and creative skills, they began the introduction to photoshop tutorials. During this process they learnt how to locate and create files with their names as well as edit images. The focus of the project “to capture the spirit of Railton Road” began with photographic explorations of the street. Through this process participants were immersed in a rich local history that they explored on their own terms. The groups first engagement with archives was by way of the Lambeth archives. Here they discovered connections to the street though mapping documentation or archives that give insight to what was taking place on the Road. As they engaged with archives connecting to Railton Road they began to show their understanding and in their own way, respect for the archives, seen through their handling and questioning of the things they held. “Why would squatters need a handbook if there just squatting?”
